Radicular symptoms are common problems that we see in our Bellingham, WA chiropractic office, particularly in those people who have been involved in a car accident.
Spinal injuries can irritate nerves in a number of ways:
- Muscle and ligament injury can cause inflammation of the nerve root, which can irritate, or interfere with the proper function of the peripheral spinal nerve.
- Intervertebral disc injuries are classified as a disc bulge, disc herniation, disc protrusion or disc extrusion. All of these can cause the disc come in contact with the nerve root which irritates, or to pinch the nerve which decreases function of the nerve. Lumbar disc herniation is one of the most common causes of sciatica. Sciatica is not a condition itself, rather it’s secondary to another condition. Sciatica can be experienced as numbness, tingling or shooting pains in the low back, buttocks, and legs.
- The effects of altered biomechanics, trauma, etc over time can cause degeneration or arthritis. Arthritis is the addition of low-quality bone which calcifies the spinal joints and takes up space in the foramen from which the nerves exit the spine. This is called foraminal spinal stenosis, which decreases increases the probability of irritation of the nerves.
